The World Health Organization (WHO) Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026 campaign highlights the message: “Every story is unique, every journey matters.” The theme recognises that every person affected by breast cancer has a different experience and that everyone deserves dignity, support and access to timely, quality care.

Breast cancer remains one of the world’s most significant health challenges. According to the WHO breast cancer fact sheet, approximately 2.4 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally in 2024, while 694,000 died from the disease.

Awareness and Early Detection
Knowing the signs of breast cancer and seeking medical advice when something unusual is noticed are important parts of early diagnosis.
According to WHO guidance on breast cancer, possible signs can include:
- A new lump or thickening in the breast
- Changes in the size or shape of the breast
- Changes to the skin, including dimpling, redness or other unusual changes
- Changes in the nipple or surrounding skin
- Abnormal or bloody nipple discharge
Not every breast change means cancer, but unusual changes should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Early diagnosis and timely access to appropriate care can improve outcomes.
